Narration In Pursuance Of Books

Criticism Regarding Books
Very interesting characters, and you see how cultural beliefs impact the characters' choices. But it's on the depressing side--tragic, leaving you with the feeling like the characters were fated to follow their paths because of their character traits and culture, and couldn't change or avoid the ending.

You desire, you suffer. Thus was how the unhappy characters of this novel suffered all the miseries in life. Sigh. This sad story just reminds me of Nectar in a Sieve.

finally finished, just in time to commemorate the Arab Spring (1st annivererary, that is!). great book whch begins horribly (for the characters) and just goes on to end horribly (again, for the characters). a true heartbreaker. a must read for anyone into Egypt!

My first read for the Nobel-prize winner Naguib Mahfouz, I really enjoyed Mahfouz's writing style but ironically (since it's called the beginning and the end) I enjoyed the beginning a lot and hated the end.The story follows a poor Egyptian family who lost their father to a heart attack, he left behind a wive, 3 sons Hasan, Hussien, Hassanien and one daughter.I found the characters very selfish and self-absorbed each thinking of their own needs (view spoiler)[ , I don't know who is the worst ,

To paraphrase someone, a great writer makes the universal specific and the specific universal. This novel succeeds magnificently. The story begins with a standard family disaster in Cairo in the mid-1930s. The father, a minor government official, suddenly dies. His family slips into penurious poverty in short order. Much of what happens to them would be familiar to any suddenly income-less household in the USA or elsewhere. Any character defects are magnified by their suffering, with little hope

it's a novel about real life of widows and orphan

Reading English version. A slow book, maybe not the best translation, but has a lingering effect on me. The way Mafouz can disassemble and reassemble the emotions of his characters is masterful. Through his characters, he can pound the same issues (abject poverty, frustration, despair, small joys) from so many different angles so that light is shed each time.
