"19 avril 1936.

Overall, this is a detailed and researched insight into the lebensborn programme, a Nazi enterprise that sought to breed racially pure children to be the leaders of the third reich. The story is narrated my the first child of this programme, from before his birth until he is 10 and the Second World War has ended. I found it exhausting but important. It was not unbearably gruesome but, despite the narrator seeing and supporting the horrific events of the SS (in particular), it did not at all4.5 starsMax born on 20 April 1936 (Hitler's birthday) the first born in the Lebensborn programme designed to produce the Aryan race, he doesn't know his mother or father only that his mother was impregnated by a German SS officer. Baptised by Hitler he becomes the role model for all the other children. When he's 5 he helps the Germans kidnap Polish children and then meets and befriends Lukas a Polish Jew, blond, blue eyes who infiltrates the German's experiment for the perfect race. I enjoyed
Review coming. Actually a solid book, creepy and awful, but creepy and awful in the same ways as the historical setting it describes. There is a fine balance in how explicit to make such descriptions (Octavia Butler talked a lot about this related to her novel Kindred, about African-American slavery) and I think especially toward the end, Max wobbled in this respect, but I still got through it very fast. It might be too explicit for an American YA audience, I have to think about that. It's not
This book was a historical fiction novel about Hitler's Youth. The book was told through the perspective of a child, Max, and he was of the "superior Aryan race". Max lives at the hospital he was born in until he is four years old (he is part of the Lebensborn program). When he is four years old, he is moved out of the city where he was born to help the Nazis find Polish children that they could take and Germanize. After a few years of this, Max is moved to a school in Kalish, where he begins to
If you like your books to be challenging and thought provoking then Max is your kind of novel! Credit must go to the author Sarah Cohen-Scali and translator (Texts own Penny Hueston!) for crafting a character that despite the evil he embodies was able to invoke empathy in us as readers. We couldnt help but feel for Max as he tries desperately to navigate a world of bleak political control and indoctrinationthe consequences of which are often devastating. From the beginning of the book we were
This is a story that needs to be told. The Lebensborn program, where the Nazis literally bred people with superior Aryan characteristics in order to create a master race, is not something that you hear a lot about. At least, not in fiction, and certainly not in fiction presented to teens. So when I heard about this book, a book narrated by a Lebensborn beginning at his birth, I thought, Finally. This will be a striking, important book! What would it be like to be raised, from birth, on a diet of
So, first of all, I've just read the book. I think it is awesome reading. If you loved Diary of the young girl - Anne Frank or Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo, you'd love this too. It is not such a personal book, but the author did an excellent research and wrote an inspirating, pleasant and educational story. That is where spoilers begin ... just a warning.(view spoiler)[At the beginning I had a hard time with starting read because of its style of writing. It is spoken in the first person in point
