A good reference for Pern world beginners. I just started getting into the Pern series via short stories and now this compiled graphic novel. I often wondered how some envisioned the dragon riders, their steeds, and their world. Well adapted and not so overly complicated as the novel would be, if I went into it first. I can now go on and read the novels further with a better image and understanding of this built-up world full of engineered dragons, the travel of in-between, and the dangerousThis was my favorite book as a pre-teen. No idea how it stands up.
read the whole series 3 times that is how much I loved this series of books
I have read the Dragonriders of Pern series over and over at least 5 times since 1977. Anything by Anne McCaffrey is well worth the read.
I am really torn about how to rate this book. It is a thrilling adventure and the premise is wonderful but rereading as an adult I see so many incidents of violence against woman- particularly from the main characters partner I find it hard to recommend to younger readers. We are supposed to cheer this paring with a man who taunts, shakes and has non consensual sex with Lessa. I know this book is a product of its time but I found those parts hard to swallow.
I'm enjoying this series, a good quick read. I'm also happy that I could let my kids read this, so far. It is hard to find a good clean book. There is reference to the fact that there is sexual involvement between people, but it isn't what I would call "dirty" talk, and you don't have to read the details. I'm constantly on guard for this, as I also try to find books for my young adults to read.I also find it interesting that I can't figure out the order of the books in the series though, but it
Anne McCaffrey has created an amazing and complex world. Each book crafts a truly engrossing story and a thrilling adventure. Her characters are more than just believable, you find yourself becoming attached to them. McCaffrey draws you into a relationship with PERN and its people. They become like friends, or in some cases enemies. This book can be enjoyed by Sci-fi readers and no Sci-fi readers alike!
